RESPONSIBLE PRACTICE

Beautifully printed wallpaper and fabric is first and foremost, the driving force of our business. We understand that in order to bring you the highest quality products, we draw on social and environmental capital in a variety of ways and have implemented a range of practices in order to mitigate our impact. At the core of our business, we strive to create timeless designs that are unstrained by the rapid changes of fast fashion and throwaway culture and will continue to bring you joy for years to come.

Through our careful analysis of the look and feel of available wallpaper and fabric materials, we have not needed to compromise on quality to reduce our impact on the world. Though we import both our paper and fabric, we have made this decision in order to get our hands-on high-quality materials that have been manufactured and brought to us via the highest ethical standard currently available.

We print to order all of our designs in house, giving us full control of the manufacturing process. Our procedures allow us to minimise wastage and ensure that the safety and wellbeing of our staff is well tended. Our paper, fabric and the inks used for printing are nontoxic, ensuring both our customers and staff are not exposed to any potentially harmful materials. All of our sampling is produced using offcuts from larger rolls in order to further our commitment to minimising wastage.

WALLPAPER

We’re a ‘micro-batch’ printing company, all of our orders are printed on demand in custom lengths for every job. We often print wallpaper in drops to custom fit a wall or room. The drops are matched to the height of the walls and sometimes include shorter pieces for fitting around doors and windows. This not only saves on cost but can significantly reduce wastage.

Our paper is a lightweight, breathable, fine-textured material made with 100% Alpha Cellulose. It’s 100% PVC free.
It can be fully recycled and is free of lead, heavy-metals, PVC and ozone depleting chemicals. Its FSC mix credit certified, REACH compliant, with CE-marking in accordance with EN15102:2019. Manufactured in Europe, it is assigned the French regulation rating of A+ for low VOC emissions.

Our selection of stock adheres to the following fire safety standards: Australia - AS 5637.1-2015: Group 1 / USA - ASTM E84-23: Class B / Europe - EN 13501-1: C-d1, do.

FABRIC

Linen is one of the most sustainable products currently manufactured. The raw material, flax, is watered purely by rain and minimal pesticides and fertilisers are used on the crops.

Our manufacturer guarantees that no waste occurs in the production of their linen – each part of the plant is put to use outside of the textile industry including food production, soap and cosmetics, animal bedding and insulation. As a natural product, linen is also fully biodegradable. We print with a water-based pigment ink that is the cleanest, most eco-friendly of all textile printing inks.

Our printing system is waterless, requiring minimal energy for fixing. It is also free of heavy metals, formaldehyde and Alkylphenol Ethoxylates (APE), making it non-hazardous, non-toxic, and biodegradable.

We are proud that the designs created from our small studio in Sydney have resonated with so many clients around the world. This unfortunately means that the distribution of our products is a large component of our carbon footprint. To abate this, we choose to use carbon neutral couriers to deliver our products. We assist a number of other wonderful wallpaper designers around Australia through our print service and enjoy supporting the growing community of talented pattern designers across the country.

Finally, our director, Adam, is a British expat who has always been enamoured with the Australian bush. After seeing the devastation of the 2019 bushfire season, Adam decided it was time for the business to start giving back to the land that has offered him joy and inspiration over the past few decades. For every metre of wallpaper sold, Quercus & Co. makes a one-dollar donation to the Foundation for National Parks & Wildlife. FNPW is a non-government charity that engages in significant conservation work across the country.
